Lalu Prasad Yadav convicted in the third fodder scam case
January 24, 2018In what came as another setback to the former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav was on Wednesday convicted in the third fodder scam case by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi. The quantum of punishment in this case is likely to be announced on Thursday. The verdict in two other fodder scam in which Lalu Prasad is alleged to be involved is expected to be announced within a period of two months. Another former chief minister of Bihar, Jagannath Mishra, was also found guilty in the case by the special court.
The fodder scam case is a series of cases where the state funds meant for buying fodder were allegedly misappropriated by the government officials and politicians of Bihar. It involved a set of 64 cases, of which 53 were litigated in Ranchi. It all began in 1985 when the then Comptroller and Auditor General T.N. Chaturvedi was charged with small-scale embezzlement of funds from the Bihar Treasury and various department. Ten years later, the small-scale embezzlements added up to Rs. 900 crore.
The present case is the third fodder scam case in which Lalu and Jagannath are convicted. The case relates to alleged fraudulent withdrawal from the from the Chaibasa treasury in the early 1990s. An amount of about Rs 33.7 crore was allegedly drawn against a sanction amount of just Rs 7.1 lakh.
Lalu Prasad has earlier convicted in two other fodder scam cases. Earlier on December 23, 2017, Lalu was convicted in the second fodder scam case in which he was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of three and half a year and fine of Rs. 5 lakh. He is currently lodged in in Birsa Munda Central Jail of Ranchi.
His first conviction had come in September 2013, when the court handed a guilty verdict to Lalu and his predecessor, Jagannath Mishra. Lalu had received a sentence of five years in the first case. This sentence had made him the first elected official in India to be ejected from office under the then-new changes to the anti-corruption law.
