Notice period pay recovery | Legal notice received from the company

i have joined a company and left in two months because of bad culture and atmosphere. I handed over office assets and informed HR of my resignation but did not serve notice period of 90 days. I did not sign the appointment letter, Now they have sent a legal notice to pay off notice period dues(5lakhs), what should i do as next step ? What consequences will i face ?
It is advisable to send a reply to the legal notice stating your defence qua the same. Moreover acceptance of a joining letter is sufficient and merely because you did not sign it would not make your case strong for the reason you have accepted it and acted upon the same.
