What legal recourse is available to an employee if his company suddenly decides to demote him to a very low position with the intention of forcing him to resign before retirement?

An employee can approach central administrative tribunal challenging the demotion and as wel can file a suit for declaration viz a viz seeking declaration that such demotion is voidand can also seek setting aside such demotion.

You may write a mail to the higher authority asking the reason in written behind such demotion. You can also ask for as to how you are technically fit for such post when you already hold a way higher post in the same company.
You may further send them a legal notice and can ask for compensation for defaming you by asking you to join a lower position in the same organization for no particular reason when you are at a much higher post presently.

All depends upon the agreement between employer and employee. If the agreement has clause catering for demotion under certain circumstances, then employer may be free to do so. If not, actions are illegal and the same can be challenged in court after serving notice to the employer.
