Can school authorities ask for marriage certificate

the school is asking for my marriage certificate can they ask ? they have not asked anyone till now in my school i work in a private school can i take legal action against this
If the service Regulations for teaching and non-teaching staff provide for marriage registration certificate, concerned employee must furnish the required document.For the purpose of statutory benefits, marriage registration certificate is a must document. I have failed to comprehend as to why a married person is shying away to provide the marriage registration certificate with the school authority.
