Its not compulsory to join the existing union. It depends upon employees to join or not, however you will not entitled to union benefits than. Please read MOU between employer and employees benefits agreement.

This is my response to you: 1. Workers have the right, under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), to refuse to join a union; 2. However certain contracts make it mandatory to engage only the leader of the Union to handle disputes on behalf of the workers.
