SECTION 63 IPC - Indian Penal Code - Amount of fine

As per new Indian Criminal law, IPC Section 63 has been replaced with BNS Section 8 with effect from July 1, 2024.
(IPC section is included as subsection in BNS with addition of words ‘liability in default of payment of fine, etc.’ in heading.)

Where no sum is expressed to which a fine may extend, the amount of fine to which the offender is liable is unlimited, but shall not be excessive.

In simple words, if no specific amount is mentioned for the fine, the court can impose any amount as a fine, but it should not be excessive.
