Husband frequently giving threat to life and beating on small argument

Hi My husband keeps threatening to hit me or kill me at the slightest arguement. He has in the past shown minor tendencies of actual physical agression. I’m worried that he can actually do what he threatens to next time. Is there any way I can protect myself?
