In India, apart from a marriage certificate, there are various other documents that are legally valid to prove marriage. These include:

  1. Marriage registration certificate: Under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, it is mandatory to register marriages. Therefore, a marriage registration certificate issued by the concerned authority can serve as legal proof of marriage.

  2. Affidavit: An affidavit is a sworn statement made by the bride and groom affirming that they are married. It can serve as evidence of marriage in certain cases.

  3. Joint affidavit: A joint affidavit is a sworn statement made by the bride and groom together, affirming that they are married. It can also serve as proof of marriage.

  4. Photographs: Photographs of the wedding ceremony, with the bride and groom, their families and guests, can be used as evidence of marriage.

  5. Wedding video: A video recording of the wedding ceremony can also serve as proof of marriage.

Hi
A marriage certificate is the only recognized document.
if the marriage was conducted before year 2000, then wedding photo's, passport or aadhar or ration card is also a sufficient proof.
if the parties submit an affidavit that they are married , then this is also sufficient proof of marriage.

Sir,
Mostly Religious marriage ceremony is considered as a legal marriage in India, now registration of marriage is a legal requisite, mostly for visa and immigration purposes a marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages is compulsory.

In recent times, the Supreme Court of India gave directions to frame laws to make the registration of marriages obligatory.
