What happens after FIR is registered?
12-May-2023 (In Criminal Law)
I have lodged a FIR at the police station for theft at my house. I don’t know what to do now and what will happen after registering FIR.
Once the FIR is lodged the police are legally bound to start investigating the case. Investigation includes collecting evidence, questioning witnesses, inspecting the crime scene, forensic testing, recording statements etc.
If the police are successful in identifying the criminals and finding them then the arrest can be made.
After the investigation is complete, the police will record all their findings in a ‘Challan’ or charge sheet. If it is believed that there is enough proof on the charge sheet the case goes to court. On the other hand, after their investigations if the police conclude that there is not enough evidence or proof that a crime has been committed they can close the case after justifying their reasons in court. If the police decide to close the case, it is their duty to inform the person who filed the FIR of this decision.

What is difference between police complaint and FIR?
A police officer begins investigating the case when a FIR has been filed. When a complaint is lodged, the police officer will not investigate the matter until instructed by the competent authority. The Magistrate does not take cognizance in the first instance until a specific FIR has been reported to him. 25 Jun 2023
What is the next process of FIR?
What happens once an FIR has been recorded? The police officer immediately investigates the incident after the recording. He immediately goes to the site of investigation and collects any evidence, which may include photos or material.
Can a case be withdrawn after FIR?
Before the judge, you must file a withdrawal petition and affidavit, in which it is stated that you do not object if the accused person realizes the outcome of the case. The compliment must be made and the accused must attend the hearing. 24 Aug 2023
Can police file FIR without evidence?
It is not necessary that the informant has first-hand knowledge of the crime. An anonymous police report that includes information about the offence may be considered a formal complaint. A police officer may also file an FIR if they have knowledge of a cognizable offense. 23 Sept 2023
After registering FIR, police start investigation. The police record the statement from the complainant and any other witnesses. They gather material evidence relevant to the case. They search for the accused, and if warranted they can arrest him or her and record their statement.
