Website and Domain Ownership Transfer. Thread by Client
26-Jun-2023 (In Corporate Law)
HI WE ARE A SMALL WEB DESIGN COMPANY. I made a website for school. I bought domain name and I hosted domain and website. After 3 years now school wants to stop my all services and they want all ownership (like domain, website, facebook page etc.) I created all and they were paying for the services. Am I legally bound to transfer all ownership free of cost? Or Can I charge some logical Fee for this?
Hello Querist,
Was there any agreement between you and the school? From the contents of the question, what i could gather is that you did and intended to do all work on behalf of the school for which they have already paid you for the services rendered.
Thereby, may have bought the domain name and hosted the domain but under all circumstances you were acting on behalf of the school and carrying out their instructions and accordingly being paid by them.
In the circumstances, without any Agreement in writing, you do not have any legal right to claim implied ownership over said domain and the school has every right to claim back the ownership of domain.
Note: The above legal opinion was based on the contents expressed by you and may change pursuant to the actual perusal of documents and its factual contents.
Thanks,
Sohail Haque.
