Recovery case filed, what to do?

Hi, My father got some amount of 30000 from a person before 10 years and he gave that in installments to that person itseems. We don't know this until one of my a dad's friend intimated us last month. Actually My father passed away before 6 months and he never told this 30000 money issue to us before. Now that person filed a case on us asking for 12 lacs (including interest) saying as my dad didn't gave the amount back. As I'm out of town now, didn't signed and get the papers from post office yet. Could someone please help on how to handle/face this case?
