Friend not returning my money, what legal action can I take ?

i have rendered 50000 rs to one of my friend at the end of 2013 without any legal agreement, through a bank cheque. But he is not returning my money now. To prove i can submit the bank statement where there clearly written that 50000rs was withdrawn by him through cheque dated 06.09.2013. Now i want to know should i able to take any legal action against him, to get my money back?
f you have any proof of transfer of money that you made or your friend made then you can keep those papers as evidence and file for a recovery suit in the court once you have sent him a legal notice and a reasonable amount of time to pay the pending amount.
