Friend borrowed money from me but not paying back now

My friend borrowed money from me via cheque paid half but now not paying back. Though there is no formal letter or paperwork signed between us but its an official cheque payment and shown loan in both our accounting books. He was repaying till one year back but isnt.
Dear sir,
Has your friend paid half through cheque or have you paid half the amount he asked for. If he is denying to return back the amount then you can file a suit for recovery of money against him. You can also send him a legal notice demanding your money back from him.
