Delhi orders second cleanliness drive
January 12, 2017The Delhi HC bench ordered the Delhi municipalities to carry out a second cleanliness drive around Delhi for a period of 10 days, as the first drive that took place in December 2016 failed to show the expected results.
The court expressed its anger by calling the municipalities “ non-starters” and further stated that the municipalities would start running only after the court gives them a whip from behind. The court demanded that, after the second 10 day long cleanliness drive there should be a perceptible difference in the state of cleanliness of the capital city.
The High Court further pointed out that even after the first 15 day long cleanliness drive which was ordered by the court in December 2016 for removal of debris and rubble (malba) from the roads, the roads still did not look clean as beneath the rubble lied loose earth and the pavements and roads which are often not finished, so as a result when there is breeze, this loose soil gets into the atmosphere and adds to pollution in the environment.

OUR TAKE
The order given by the Delhi HC was much required as the state of cleanliness in the capital is pathetic. The municipalities fail to do their duties and thus even after the first cleanliness drive no significant results were evidently seen. Hence, the order of the court shall act as a wake-up call to such authorities to abide by their duties.
