Nirbhaya’s mother and LawRato.com to provide free legal aid to female victims of violent crime

May 17, 2017

After getting a favourable judgement from the Supreme Court, upholding the earlier death penalty sentence for the accused in the Nirbhaya rape case, her mother Asha Devi is now intent on helping others in their struggle for justice.
As part of her initiatives under the Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust, she has launched NyayaJyoti Foundation in collaboration with LawRato.com - India's leading lawyer search platform.
The non-profit organisation aims to provide pro-bono legal advice and litigation support to needy female victims of violent crimes.
Nirbhaya's parents had reached out to LawRato.com in March last year and were provided full legal support and representation in the SC under LawRato's Free Legal Aid program.
“ My daughter got justice from the legal system. I will now strive to ensure more daughters of our country can get the same” , adds Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi.
NyayaJyoti will provide legal assistance through LawRato's network of 4500 lawyers, present across 400 cities in India.
“ Most of our partner lawyers are happy to offer their services pro-bono, if it can help impact society in a positive way. Their support for the initiative has given us the confidence to launch NayaJyoti” , adds Rohan Mahajan - Founder, LawRato.com.
According to statistics of National Crime Records Bureau, there has been an increase of over 43 per cent in crimes against women from 2011 to 2015 and 105 per cent over the past decade (2005 to 2015).
“ Many people have contacted Asha Devi over the years, seeking help with their legal issues. We have already identified two such cases where we will be providing assistance” , shares Nikhil Sarup, Co-Founder, LawRato.com.
NyayaJyoti Foundation has also launched a website www.nyayajyoti.org, where legal aid seekers can reach out, and stay updated on the initiatives undertaken.
