Cow slaughter to be punishable by life sentence in Gujarat
April 01, 2017The Gujarat Government has enhanced the punishment for those found guilty of cow slaughter or being directly involved with cow slaughter from seven years to life sentence by making amendments in the state’s Animal Preservation Bill. By passing this Bill, Gujarat has become the first state in the country to have such a law against cow slaughter.
Also another major amendment, the Bill provides for permanent seizure of vehicles involved in transportation of cows, beef or beef products illegally, by the state government. Till date the provision was to withhold such vehicles for six months, but now the provisions include forfeiture. The maximum fine for the offence has also been increased from Rs 50,000 to one ranging from Rs 1 lakh-Rs 5 lakh.
Besides, the punishment for conviction for illegal transportation of cow, beef or beef products has been enhanced from three years imprisonment to seven years. However, the Act allows transportation of animals of cow progeny with permission, but only between 7 pm and 5 am.
The bill makes all offences under the act cognisable and non-bailable.
The cow is considered sacred by India's Hindu majority, and killing cows is illegal in many states.
Gujarat has by passing this Bill, taken a major step towards making the state cow-slaughter free and has also set an example for the other states to follow.

OUR TAKE
Cow is considered to be the most sacred and auspicious animal. Hindus not only worship cows but also hold them in high esteem. They are a source of dairy and its products. Killing them is equated to killing a human being. Therefore, this move by the Gujarat Government is a step towards protecting our culture and religion and punishing the wrong-doers.
