Whether you are entitled to give compensation will depend on many factors:-
1. What was the nature of his employment? Regular or Temporary?
2. Since how many years is he working for you?
3. What is his role or job-profile?
4. What is the salary amount last given to him?
5. What benefits such as Insurance, PPF, HRA, etc. You were giving him?
6. Why did he leave?
7. What was his conduct during service and before leaving?
8. How much compensation is he asking and on what grounds?
9. Did you issue any termination letter or notice to him?
10. Are there any pending dues against his name?

Once you give these details, proper legal advice may be obtained.

Dear Sir,
Did you issue any appointment letter to him ? If so whether there were any terms and conditions in the appointment letter ? Please let me know the above facts, then only I would be able to advise you properly.
Regards..
