Deleted data from company's computer company asking for compensation

Hi, I am working for a software company in Mumbai. The background is as follows The company terminated me and on notice period. They asked me to return the laptop, which before returning I removed the data becuase i was sending via courier to company and for keeping it safe. Now my company is saying I have deleted all the data and there is loss for company - they are also saying 1) I have to pay for the loss of data in my device 2) If not they will take legal action I had told them that data is already available in company network and emails . is this a valid case? can they take legal

You cannot tamper with company data. In your appt letter there should be clause binding you to return all company data on termination of your employment. They can take necessary legal action against you.

If you have removed the data on a pen drive or hard drive, it is advisable that you hand over the same to them with an explanation why you removed the same.
