NRI uncle demands gifted money back

11-Apr-2023 (In Family Law)
Sir, I am married and living in India. During year 2002, I visited UK as a visitor when I was a bachelor. My uncle sponsored me and helped me by sending 2000 GBP towards the expenditure. I had stayed there at his home for 12 weeks. Now, as of today, as my personal relations with my uncle and his family are no good, he demands that 2000 GBP back after over 15 years. At the time of sending those money he had not cleared that he had given the money on the basis of paying back to him. In fact, during the appeal for the visa, he represented before the adjudicator for determination and reasons followig points: 1. He said that he and his wife always stayed with mye and my fathers' family during indian holiday. 2. He had always felt guilty for not inviting me and my family to the UK for a visit. to return the geneoristy of the hospitality that had been extended to him by my family, he invited me and helped me with those money. So how can he demand gifted money back? Is this legal?

No your uncle can not claim the gifted money as there was no such agreement regarding the repayment of the same and the said 2000GBP were given you in friendly capacity i.e, he gave the money to you as gift/donation which he can not claim back that too after 15 years. As, common law provides 6 year time limit on filing a case for repayment of debt. And If governed by Indian laws then, there is a limit of 3 years.
