If your mother-in-law has confiscated your jewelry as alleged by you and it has been a year now, you can write a complaint to your nearest women's cell seeking their help to recover your ornaments. They will in turn forward the same application/complaint to your local police station hence you can claim back your "Stridhan" via this mode. The second option is you can approach a lawyer and he would further initiate matrimonial proceedings as per law.
Thank you.

Hi It depends on whether you are still continuing to be in the marital home or living separately. If you are living with your mother in law's family with your husband and sharing the matrimonial home as a joint family then it is a personal family issue which can be sorted out by formal talks between the elders of the family and if you are living separately due to some marital issues then demanding your shridhan is your right and you could mention it before the court.

You can file a domestic violence case under the Protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act. Also invoke Section 498 A (b) (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code against her and demand your jewellary back.

U can file a complaint against your mother in law for cheating and criminal breach of trust saying that she had induced you to part with jewellery and now inspire of repeated requests not returning it back . but keep in mind that this step will sour your relation with your in-laws and may b husband if you are still in marriage and of your husband is not supporting u. So plz ask your husband to talk to your mother in law for returning jewellery n then only take such step

The case of Domestic Violence and FIR u/s 406 / 498A is very appropriate in your case. You may approach CAW cell for your problem. You may further file a civil case for recovery of the same, but that is a very remote procedure and not frequently used due to availability of FIR and Domestic Violence cases.
However, it is recommended to reconcile the matter within family to preserve the ties, as there are a possibility of the matrimonial ties been ruined after police complaint. You may talk to some senior matured member of your family. Still if no solution is remaining, then first of all you prepare the list of jewellery and other dowry articles, and thereafter file a police complaint before CAW cell of the area. You may collect the receipts/bills of such dowry articles as evidence.
In addition to the same, you may file a Domestic Violence case before the Court of Concerned Magistrate.
