Can I get marriage certificate from US embassy if married in India

Hi, I am right now in USA and i need to get marriage certificate to get passport for my wife and child. I would not be able to travel back for few months.My wife and kid are in India.Will i be able to get the marriage certificate by getting an affidavit from embassy here and sending to India. What should i do to get the marriage certificate? Thanks in Advance.
If your marriage is already registered and you are a Hindu from Tamil Nadu, you could search and get your records in this site: http://www.tnreginet.net/english/smar.asp. Otherwise your wife can apply for marriage certificate in the concerned registrar office and she could get it.
