Can boyfriend force to be with him on the basis of past relationship

I was in relationship with a boy but I realized I don?t want to marry him and I cannot be happy with him so I tried for break-up but he is not ready to leave me and he says if I leave him he will involve my family and friends in the matter and also threatens me for suicide and defamation on online site.. Every time i tried for break up same is repeated by him.. Can he force me to be with me on the basis of our past relationship? m stuck kindly advice what to do? Also please tell is it matter of civil or criminal offense
