How to obtain death certificate if it is very old

MY GREAT GRAND FATHER DIED IN 1940'S AT OUR NATIVE PLACE IN UTTAR PRADESH BUT NOW WE OUR AT MUMBAI AND REQUIRED HIS DEATH CERTIFICATE BUT THE NAGAR PALIKA DOESNT HAVE ANY RECORD OF MY GREAT GRAND FATHER THEY STATE AS IT IS VERY OLD NOT POSSIBLE TO GET SO WHAT CAN I DO INSTEAD OF DEATH CERTIFICATE

you have to be specific to state as to for what purposes you require death certificate of your grandfather i.e. name those who are denying the fact of his death and whether you require his death certificate to claim any right. If your right is dependent on the fact of death of your grandfather, then by circumstancial evidence i.e. witnesses (close blood relatives) deposing in affirmative will prove the fact of death of your grandfather. But first apply formaly to Nagarpalika to issue death certificate and receive their reply as you have stated in your query.
