How to change muslim name to hindu of wife without religion change

18-May-2023 (In Documentation Law)
Hello. I am married to a muslim woman from last 1.5 years. We are living happily and our families had also agreed to our marriage. But the problem is we live as a nuclear family in a city but belong to a village in other state. My father has just retired from the army and we will be shifting to our village soon. The Problem is that I don't want my relatives and friends in village to know that my wife is a muslim. If they get to know this there will be big trouble in the village or even a threat to our life. To make sure that this doesn't happen I want to change my wife's muslim name to a hindu name. I just want to change her name and not her religion. I want to know how I can do it, is it possible to change her name to a hindu name without changing religion? And if this is possible what is the procedure to do it and how much it will cost. I would be really obliged and grateful to receive a reply.

Follow the below given steps for changing your own name.

1. Affidavit:
Go to you local Notary and make an affidavit regarding change of your name. Submit it in your respective District Court before a Magistrate or Notary Public. The Affidavit must mention the current name and the desired new name, and may mention in brief the reason for name change. The Affidavit must be made on a Non-Judicial Stamp Paper of minimal value.

2. Newspaper Publication:
The next step is to publish advertisements announcing your name change in two local newspapers – one in the local official language and another in English.

3. Gazette Notification
Get your name published in the Official Gazette of your state. For this purpose, you must approach the Government Press of your respective state and fill up the form for the same and pay the prescribed fees. Your name change notification will be published in the state’s Official Gazette and you will be sent copies of the same at the address given by you.

With Gazette notification, the name change is officially completed.

Now you can apply for name change in all other official documents by providing copies of Affidavit, newspaper ads and Gazette Notification as proof of name change.

It may take a month to change your name legally in India. But the time required to change name from official documents is additional.

Then you will have to apply to all the concerned authorities and departments for making the said correction or changing your name.
