Can I ask for compensation if I file for criminal defamation

So if i file a criminal defamation suit,I cant ask for compensation? And for civil defamation can i ask for compensation? Which of the both are preferrable?
Criminal defamation in the laws of many countries defamation is defined both as a civil wrong and a criminal offence. In other words, a person can either be sued for compensation by the affected person or be criminally prosecuted by the state.
