Harassment by husband what can I do

We are married for 16 years now but my husband has harassed me mentally and physically all the time. In last 2-3 years verbal abusement has reached such a level that either I should leave him or should do suicide. We hav 12 yr old son and he wants us to stay together. My spouse is otherwise a good person but when it comes to any personal talk or decision he tries to use his husband power and takes advantage of some situations at my parents home and harnesses me mentally. Please advice on immediate action which I need to take.
