Divorce filed after 17 years of marriage how much maintenance possible

What is the maximum duration till which the case can get extended if it is contested divorce. Recently we met a lawyer who has advised that the case will wind up by max 3 years as per high court new law, also i need not give her any money till i get court orders stating the final maintenance amount. During the hearings what is the amount of maintenance to be provided. ... I'm hindu .
Maintenance amount is depend up on many factors like whether she can earn and maintain herself? What are the sources of income of husband and his liabilities. After calculating this what ever remain will be considered for maintenance amount.
