Can derogatory Statement On Whatsapp be used for defamation?

One Ex secretary of society has used derogatory statement saying i miss apportioned fund of society, where as in audit report nothing like this has been qualified, can i file defamation case for the same if yes then what would be punishment to him and how much time it will take?

The definition of defamation clearly states that, " ....by words either spoken or intended to be read, or by signs or by visible representations, makes or publishes any imputation.... "

This anything sent on what's app which harms the reputation can definitely come under purview of defamation (backed by S. 66 IT act and Indian evidence Act)

Punishment is imprisonment up to 2 years or fine or both

One cannot state the exact time for the case to conclude since it's a complete trial and takes a minimum of 1.5 to 2 years
