Protection for men against extreme provocation and assault by women

What is the protection available for a man and a woman not married to each other, in a situation where arguments turn into a ugly fight where the girl assaults the man and under extreme provocation the man reacts and hits back. The girl threatens to go to Police to file assault charges against the man. How should he guard his interest from the Police and under the law?
There is no law in India providing protection to a man against the threats received by a girl to file assault charges. Once the complaint is filed against you regarding assault, you can defend yourself and prove the accusation wrong.
