If a suspect is arrested by police and beaten in jail what can be done

23-Mar-2023 (In Criminal Law)
If a suspect is taken by police and arrested and put in lock up, do the police have any right to beat them or torture? Even after the judgment and the criminal is put in jail, is there any clause to phyisically or mentally torture them? if yes, are there any torture tests codified by IPC?

IPC permits police only to interrogate and investigate but never permits use of even mild violence against suspects. But police make use of these words and their power to torture suspects. Besides Police Acts in each state and Police manuals give ample powers to police but never expressly to torture. Unfortunately an older SC judgement had observed that using violence some times by police is the ' colour of their duty'. If you have proper medical documents you can file for compensation and also to punish those who tortured you.
