Dowry demand 1 month before marriage

One year ago my marriage date had been decided. My family had repeatedly confirmed that there is no demand from the starting of the first meeting frm the groom family. No demands as such were made initially. Dowry was demanded by grooms family just a month before marriage. We refused to give dowry & now my family is no longer interested in this marriage & have cancelled the marriage. However, the grooms family is still ready for marriage. Now they say that they don't Want anything. But we feel that their demand may rise again after marriage & have decided to cancel marriage. Can a dowry case

Dear Medam that as per averment in ur statement without considered dowary ur both family families agreed for ur marriage ,before one moth groom family demands dowary from ur family's, and ur family refused ,first u know that if they directly demands to u family ,then they are lible under act , second if any doubts between the family's then clear doubts and proceed further rest on VI's a vise

demanding dowry even before marriage is an offence and you can file a case against them and can recover the expenditures made by you on ceremonies and functions. However, if over all reputation of family is good and the mediators are sound persons, you should trust them. Almost all the marriages, it happens.
