Does criminal record effect emploment

i was arrested under ipc 308 over a fight with the neighbour four years ago and i got bail within 9 days..later we also registered case against them and as a result fir was also registered against them and the fir was quashed by compromise between 2 parties within 1 year..i was a student that time and my lawyer told me not to mention it anywhere as it has been quashed...now i got selected in an mnc as a software engineer and in Background verification form it is asked is there any criminal case registered or pending against you .....what should i answer kindly help
It is advisable not to disclose as, as a matter of policy, many companies don't hire such people but as per law there is no such bar that one can't be hired in case, there lies a pending litigation against his/her.
