yes it can be done in the compoundable offences and in family matters and you can go for this at any stage can be settled through Lok Adalat. but in the serious offences compromise can be done only through the high court but not in the cases of the offences which are harmful for the life of a person. This differs as per the category of the offence.

Composition for the compoundable offences can be allowed at any stage including appellate stage. However for quashing of criminal proceedings of a non-compoundable offence on the basis of settlement one should approach High Court on earliest possible stage because after the conclusion of evidence normally court decline interference.

If it is any pitty offensence than it is easy to get compromised but if it is under trial in major offence then gawah ke bayan badlne padenge and on the behalf of it case chutt sakta hai.but it should be done before order of court.
