Arrested for stealing vehicles how can we do

23-May-2023 (In Criminal Law)
A person Mr.X was arrested on the charges of stealing 4 auto-rickshaws. He was beaten-up badly in police lockup with another accomplice Mr.Y. Mr.X told his family that he was not aware that the auto he was driving was a stolen one. But perhaps after the beating, he was forced to admit that he stole the vehicles with another person Mr.Y who was the mastermind. On the second day of the arrest the duo were sent to Arthur Road Jail. Mr.X has a family of 5 (Four minor children and wife). The family is shocked and is so poor that it cannot even afford to hire a lawyer. Please guide.

Mr. X can seek the assistance of the Legal Aid Cell which provides free legal services to deserving clients. On merits, Mr. X has only a remote chance. Confession before the Police Officers cannot be held against Mr. X. Secondly, he will have to demonstrate how Mr.Y was the mastermind and how he was deceived into committing an offence taking advantage of his poverty. He will have to show whether he had a valid licence to drive an auto rickshaw, secondly, whether the autorickshaws had the relevant permits.
