Is copyright required for entire website or just for the codes

12-Jul-2023 (In Trademark & Copyright Law)
Respected Sir/Madam, I have coded and designed a website with a unique idea. The website has got functioning that is not available in any website. I want to know that I should copyright my whole website? or should I patent only that code(with unique functioning). That part of code has got about 10K lines.

Dear Sir,

At the outset you would have to address the issue what is that you intend to protect. Copyright is for literary, artistic, dramatic, cinematographic and photography work amongst others. It per se covers literary and artistic work. Yes you can have a copyright protection on the layout and the artistic work of the website. With respect to patents there has to be something unique and tantamount's to an invention. What news to be seen whether your claims amount to be an invention and wether anything similar exists across the usual eight jurisdictions before we file the patent application. Per se software is not patentable but there are options and ways where we can consider doing the same.

Warm regards,

Joseph
