Person allowed to use app and publish and now threatening to file case

NOTE:There are no Legal papers associated with any of this, just conversations in mail,Instant Messaging and word of mouth. 3 months back a designer approached me to develop an app for him with promised ownership. There was no form of payment involved. I developed on a design he provided me with. The resources like images used are "free to edit,use and redistribute, but credit us". The design also was heavily 'Inspired' based on other published app. None of the designs are patented. He just provided the directions on how to implement it via images. The whole code is mine, a part of which he has. After 2 months he backed out, and then I said clearly that I would publish the app myself and he said specifically that i am free to use his ideas. Now that I am about to publish and he used the app, he is threatening to take action. The design is similar to the ones he provided,Can he take action? Can i take action if he hurts my app business?
Has anyone one of you had taken the copyright, trademark rights for the application. was there any written agreement between the two of you that in case one leaves the other cannot use the same or something similar to it. if there is no such agreement then he cannot file a case for infringement.

MY OPINION THAT i have looking through your statements,and my conclusion that your should steps against you legally, you have ample field of oppositions, firstly , you have scope on patent regulations, you can move, you have scope of violation of constitutional rights, you have scope of infringement of business rules, you take steps immediately ,contact with me,you should move at competent forum.
