According to the Indian Contracts Act, every agreement in restraint of marriage is void.

There is no contract with promise of marriage. If the elders in both the families meet and enter into an agreement, then you can have an agreement, which is like an engagement. There is no particular agreement format. But we only the boy and the girl enter into some kind of an agreement, then it will not be valid in the eye of law.
