Is it mandatory for defendant to come in court in the court case date

Is it mandatory for defendant to be physically present in court for a civil case? If the defendant is afraid of coming to court as he may get physical harm, can the proceedings be managed by his lawyer alone? Also, in what stage, his presence would be required?
The of civil procedure specially provides for nessary party and proper party ,under which in nessary party no order could be passed in absence of such party ,you had not made what type of civil case ,so it's not possible to give any advice ,as there are certain exceptions under which court can exempt personal appearance of the party .
There is no compulsory for parties for present in civil for every hearing. The party must be present when court said for them. The party made their presence through their appointed counsel or Advocate.
